From Smelly, Stained Facial Folds to Clean, White Perfection – Bear’s Journey
Meet Bear — a handsome lilac and tan British Bulldog who has been part of The Dog’s Deli family for the past 11 months. At just 16 months old, he’s living his absolute best life… but things weren’t always this way.
Back in October 2024, Bear’s pawrents came to us desperate for help. His tear stains were out of control, the skin between his facial folds was red and inflamed, and he was clearly uncomfortable. British Bulldogs are prone to skin and coat issues, but Bear’s lilac and tan colouring meant he was at an even greater disadvantage.
Why? Lilac and tan is a diluted colour, and in certain breeds — Bulldogs included — this can increase the risk of conditions like colour dilution alopecia. Dogs with this colouring often have more sensitive skin, can suffer from hair thinning or patchiness, and may struggle more with inflammation. That’s why their diets need to be carefully considered, varied, and built specifically for them.
After talking through Bear’s history and symptoms, we agreed that a fresh, raw diet would be the best way forward. This approach meant we could control every ingredient, choosing anti-inflammatory, skin-supporting foods that would nourish him from the inside out.
Fast-forward 11 months, and Bear is almost unrecognisable. His white areas are brilliantly bright, his skin is clear, there’s no unpleasant odour, his breath is fresh, and yes… his poops are perfect! I can confidently say he’s one of the healthiest British Bulldogs I’ve ever met.
Of course, this transformation didn’t happen overnight — and it’s down to the dedication of Bear’s pawrents. They have gone above and beyond to follow his tailored feeding plan, keep his folds clean, and make sure he’s thriving. Their commitment has paid off in every way.
Tips for Bulldogs with Tear Stains & Skin Fold Issues
If you have a Bulldog (or any breed with skin folds and light coat areas), here are some ways to support their health:
-
Feed a tailored diet – Consider fresh, raw, or gently cooked meals that suit your dog’s individual needs.
-
Choose anti-inflammatory foods – Think oily fish, lean meats, and colourful vegetables.
-
Keep folds clean and dry – Moisture is the enemy when it comes to preventing bacterial growth.
-
Monitor coat changes – Especially in diluted colours, watch for hair thinning or texture changes.
-
Work with a canine nutritionist – Every dog is unique, and a professional plan can make all the difference.
Bear’s journey is proof that with the right diet, the right care, and a lot of love, even the trickiest skin and coat issues can be turned around.
